Local Marina Project

  • Mapping waterways using Sonar.

  • Inspection of waterways with a customized ROV (remotely operated vehicle).

  • Surveillance and Inspection.

After winning 3rd place in the 2021 Waterway Cleanup Challenge, the local Port director asked us if we could help out inspecting pilings at the local Marina and determine the depth of the water. We attached a compass and underwater camera to our existing ROV to record underwater activity and to permit real-time observation by the team on the dock. With this set-up we were able to inspect the pilings to make sure the bases were stable.

Marina depths ranged from 2 feet (dark red) at the entrance to the marina to nearly 12 feet (yellow) at the Southeast corner. Excursions displayed out towards the river channel show depths of 40 feet. Pool level was assumed to be greater than 3 feet.

The data was gathered by a Humminbird Helix 7 Mega SI GPS Ge fishfinder sonar and plotted with the Humminbird AutoChart Pro program.

Robotics Class: A prototype of the micro-ROV that students will learn how to assemble and operate is shown.

Engaging Students from Elementary and Middle School

Boys and Girls Club of the Lewis Clark Valley:

  • For Fall 2022 we are planning our first robotics class at the B&G Club this Spring '22. In this class students will learn how to assemble a micro-ROV and operate it in small water tanks.

  • We are involved in monthly STEM-night activities at the local B&G Club. We have done projects with them such as using cabbage juice as pH indicator, we constructed light up circuits, Motor Bots, and cardboard automata.

Monthly Stem Night at the local B&G Club: Shown here is a pH-experiment using red cabbage juice.

Future Plans

  • Working to give more students in our community an opportunity at STEAM related projects.

  • Working to make simple, hands-on activities and kits for different age groups.

  • Going to our local schools to engage elementary and middle school age kids in STEAM, especially in robotics.
